Dual Language Institute
National University Academy is proud to offer a TK-8 bilingual (Spanish/English) program at the Dual Language Institute (DLI) in Vista. We offer common-core aligned bilingual instruction using a 90/10 model. The 90/10 model stipulates that students in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten receive 90% of their instructional minutes in Spanish, and 10% of their instruction in English. Students in grades 1 and 2 receive 80% of their instructional minutes in Spanish, and 20% of their instruction in English. Students in grades 3-6 receive 50% Spanish, 50% English instruction. All students have both an English teacher and a Spanish teacher. Teachers are careful never to deviate from their assigned language of instruction.
Grades 7 and 8 currently study enrichment Spanish as they prepare for more advanced high school courses. However, we anticipate a 50/50 Spanish to English ratio in grades 7 and 8 in 2015-2016.
Our teachers excel in data-based, differentiated instruction, which ensures that all students’ learning styles and needs are addressed. We use a variety of modalities such as whole group, small group and individual instruction; as well as collaborative learning and group projects among students.
Core subject matter includes English Language Arts, Spanish Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science and PE. Art and Music are integrated with most disciplines when possible.
Our curriculum is gathered from multiple sources, which is in keeping with the Common Core movement. Key materials include Houghton Mifflin’s Go Math! series, as well as Santillana’s Yabisí series. We strive to provide real-world experiences in the forms of field trips, monthly assemblies, performances and guest speakers.
One of the most unique and positive traits about DLI is its warm, community-oriented environment. The PTO organizes projects and events which really draw our families together. These events include a Jog-a-thon, Salsa Night, a Talent Show, Field Day and much more. Parents support one another with carpools and shared child care. Long-term friendships between families are formed during drop-off, pick-up, and morning coffee. Parents have a voice in what takes place in classrooms, and communication is strong.
The DLI staff emphasizes the character traits of kindness, compassion and tolerance and this is evident in our students’ interactions with one another. There are few to no behavior problems due to a zero tolerance policy regarding bullying. Due to the small size of the school, students get to know one another well and treat one another respectfully.
Our students attend school Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We offer before and after school childcare at $5 per hour in order to facilitate our parents’ busy schedules. Students work independently from home on Fridays. Friday is also an enrichment day with special events and field trips taking place from time to time. Because our classes meet Monday through Thursday and not on Friday, our program is classified as Independent Study. However, our students are strongly encouraged to attend school faithfully Monday through Thursday in order to support our mission of bilingualism and biliteracy:
